The capability of the new Hummer EV - Brought to you by Circle Buick GMC
With the excitement surrounding the arrival of the Hummer EV, many are wondering, how off-road capable will this model be? Can it really go off-road? The short answer to this question is, absolutely! Not only will the Hummer EV be off-road-capable, but it will also be the ultimate off-road super truck to conquer any terrain this world has to challenge it with! The three-motor e4WD system with double-stacked batteries is in place to kick out an estimated 830 horsepower and a mind-boggling 11,500 lb-ft of instantly available torque. What's better, the Hummer EV will be able to take on more than two feet of water and scale 18-inch verticle obstacles. The Hummer EV will join the automotive industry and take over the off-road truck class with ease. Keep reading below to see what gives the Hummer EV its superior off-road chops!
Body-On-Frame Design for the 2022 Hummer
An all-new GMC-designed structure removes the traditional frame rails, which would raise the EV's center of gravity and make the battery pack a structural element of the chassis. Instead, the battery pack is protected by sturdy shear panels above and underneath the batteries. Meanwhile, a rigid floor on top of the battery pack helps resist twisting under the pressure of such high torque levels, even when the Sky Panels of the Infinity roof have been removed.
Front And Rear Locking Differentials
The electronically controlled and driver-selectable locking front e-Locker heightens traction capability by locking both front wheels so that they rotate at the same speed. As a result, as much as 100% of available torque can be sent to the front wheels for optimal traction and fully synchronized momentum. The rear virtual locker acts similarly to a locking differential for the dual-motor rear-drive component. Additionally, it is capable of torque vectoring, which varies the amount of torque sent to each wheel to maximize off-road traction and on-road driving dynamics.
Hummer EV's Independent Suspension
The Hummer EV features independent front and rear suspension systems. Each one is paired to the drive motors and is designed to optimize the vehicle's handling on the highway and the trails with nearly 13 inches of suspension travel. Adaptive Air Suspension gives drivers control over ride height with automatic or selectable settings. Automatic mode will adapt to changes in road conditions, while Aero mode will lower the ride height on the highway for better aerodynamics. Automatic Entry and Exit mode will lower the ride height to give passengers easy entrance and exit. Extract Mode 1 will be made available to enable the suspension height to be raised to roughly six inches, allowing the vehicle to navigate extreme off-road conditions such as fording deep water or crawling over boulders.
Four-Wheel Steer
The four-wheel steer system offers unprecedented maneuverability by allowing the rear wheels to lock in the forward position, turn opposite the front wheels, or turn in the same direction as the front wheels. The system operates with three driver-selectable settings. The Off setting provides no steering assistance. The Auto setting turns the rear wheels in the opposite direction of the front wheels while the vehicle is at low speed to improve maneuverability in narrow passes. At higher speeds, Auto will turn the rear wheels with the fronts. The exclusive CrabWalk2 feature turns the rear wheels to the same angle as the front up to ten degrees while at low speeds. This allows for diagonal motion of the vehicle for even more maneuverability range in narrow off-road situations.
